Thailand's Excise Department has seized more than 8,600 packs of smuggled cigarettes during a major enforcement operation in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya province. The operation was carried out under the direct supervision of Excise Department Director-General Dr. Pornchai Theeravech as part of a nationwide campaign to combat illegal tobacco products and tax evasion.
Officials said the seizure reflects the government's commitment to protecting public revenue and ensuring fair market competition.
Illegal Cigarettes Discovered During Inspection
The operation took place after excise officers inspected suspicious parcels at a private distribution centre in Ayutthaya. Authorities discovered thousands of illegal cigarette packs, including Krongthip brand cigarettes marked "FOR EXPORT ONLY" along with several imported brands that violated Thailand's Excise Tax Act.
The confiscated products were immediately seized for legal action.
Massive Financial Impact Identified
According to the Excise Department, the seized cigarettes are valued at approximately 574,769.88 baht. Authorities estimated unpaid excise taxes at around 555,048 baht, while potential fines in the case exceed 8.32 million baht.
The confiscated goods have been handed over to Wang Noi Police Station for further investigation and prosecution.
Government Orders Stronger Enforcement
Director-General Dr. Pornchai instructed excise offices across central Thailand to increase surveillance, intelligence gathering and inspections to identify smuggling networks. Officials have also been directed to take proactive action against individuals involved in the illegal production, transportation and sale of untaxed tobacco products.

Illegal Tobacco Trade Hurts Economy
Government officials warned that the illegal cigarette trade causes significant financial losses by reducing tax revenue and creating unfair competition for legitimate businesses. Smuggled tobacco products also undermine public confidence in regulated markets and strengthen organised smuggling networks.
The Excise Department stressed that eliminating illegal trade remains a national priority.
Authorities Vow Continued Crackdown
Thai officials confirmed that enforcement efforts against illegal goods will continue with stricter inspections and legal action against offenders. The Excise Department said it remains committed to protecting government revenue, supporting lawful businesses and preventing tax evasion through sustained nationwide operations.
Officials urged businesses and the public to report suspicious activities involving illegal tobacco products.
