A special POCSO court in Thoothukudi on Monday awarded the death penalty to a 38-year-old man convicted of sexually assaulting and murdering a 17-year-old schoolgirl in Tamil Nadu. The verdict has drawn widespread attention across the state due to the brutal nature of the crime and the demand for strict punishment in crimes against children.
The convicted man, identified as Dharma Muneeswaran from Sayalkudi, was found guilty on multiple charges related to rape and murder. The incident had taken place in March 2026 in a village under the Kulathur police jurisdiction in Thoothukudi district. The court delivered the sentence after examining evidence, witness statements, and forensic reports presented during the trial.
According to the investigation, the teenage girl had gone missing on the evening of March 10 from a scrub forest area located around 250 metres from her home. Her disappearance caused panic among family members and villagers, who immediately began searching for her. The next day, her body was discovered, leading to shock and outrage in the local community.
Police launched an intensive investigation soon after the body was found. Officials collected forensic evidence, questioned local residents, and tracked the movements of the accused. Investigators later arrested Dharma Muneeswaran after linking him to the crime through multiple pieces of evidence gathered during the probe.
The case sparked anger across Tamil Nadu, with many social organizations and child rights groups demanding speedy justice for the victim. Public pressure also increased on authorities to ensure strict legal action under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The trial was conducted in a special court dedicated to handling crimes against minors.
While announcing the judgment, the court considered the crime among the rarest of rare cases due to its brutality and the age of the victim. The judge imposed the death penalty on two counts and emphasized the seriousness of crimes committed against children and women. The verdict was welcomed by many local residents and activists who had been following the case closely.
The incident once again highlighted growing concerns over women’s safety and crimes against minors in the country. Legal experts and activists have called for stronger awareness, faster investigations, and better protection systems for children in rural and urban areas alike. Authorities have also urged parents and communities to remain alert and report suspicious activities immediately.
