Vietnamese General Secretary and President To Lam participated in a ceremonial tree-planting event at the renowned Singapore Botanic Gardens on May 30 as part of his State visit to Singapore. The event was hosted by Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and symbolized the growing friendship and cooperation between the two Southeast Asian nations.
The ceremony took place in the presence of senior officials and delegates from both countries. Before planting the commemorative tree, President To Lam and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong were briefed on the characteristics of the Hopea recopei tree species and the significance of the planting site within the historic botanical garden.
The tree-planting activity highlighted the shared commitment of Vietnam and Singapore toward environmental sustainability, green development, and ecological preservation. It also reflected the strong diplomatic ties that continue to expand under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership established between the two countries.
Located in the heart of Singapore, the Singapore Botanic Gardens is one of the nation’s most treasured landmarks. Established in 1859, the garden has played a significant role in botanical research, plant conservation, and agricultural development throughout Southeast Asia for more than a century.
The gardens are internationally recognized for their scientific contributions and natural beauty. In 2015, the site became the first and only tropical botanical garden in the world to be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Today, it remains one of Singapore’s most visited attractions and an important center for tropical plant research.
One of the most famous sections of the garden is the National Orchid Garden, which houses the world's largest collection of tropical orchids. Since the late 1920s, Singapore has been a pioneer in orchid breeding and hybridization, helping establish the country as a global leader in horticultural innovation.
The ceremony also highlighted Singapore’s long-standing commitment to environmental conservation. The nation’s modern greening movement traces its roots back to 1963 when founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew launched a nationwide tree-planting campaign. Despite being one of the most densely populated countries in the world, Singapore has successfully integrated extensive greenery into its urban landscape, earning global recognition as a “City in Nature.”
