US Senate Confirms Trump’s Former Lawyer Todd Blanche as Attorney General

US Senate Confirms Trump’s Former Lawyer Todd Blanche as Attorney General

Post by : Rohit Dhiman

The US Senate has confirmed Todd Blanche, a former personal lawyer to President Donald Trump, as the country’s new attorney general. The confirmation took place on Saturday, August 8, after a closely divided vote that highlighted continuing partisan tensions over the leadership and independence of the Justice Department. Blanche was approved by the Senate 50-49, with Republican senators Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski joining Democrats in opposing his nomination. Republicans hold only a narrow majority in the chamber, making their support important to the confirmation process.

Blanche moves from Trump’s legal team to DOJ leadership

Blanche had already been serving as acting attorney general before receiving Senate confirmation. He previously represented Trump as a private attorney in several criminal cases before joining the federal government. After the vote, Blanche expressed appreciation for the confidence placed in him and thanked Senate members and Justice Department employees. He said he was ready to lead the department and emphasized the responsibility of federal law-enforcement officials to uphold the law and protect public safety. Trump has publicly praised Blanche and described him as a highly capable member of his team. Blanche's appointment has nevertheless faced strong criticism from Democrats, who have questioned whether his previous relationship with Trump could affect the independence of the Justice Department.

Democrats raise concerns over political influence

Democratic lawmakers argued that the attorney general should serve the public rather than act in the interests of an individual president. Senator Dick Durbin, the senior Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, was among those who criticized Blanche's close association with Trump. The nomination also faced resistance within Republican ranks. Some senators had expressed concerns about proposals connected to the new administration's approach to alleged politically motivated prosecutions and tax matters involving Trump. One major point of contention was a proposed US$1.8 billion fund that Trump had described as compensation for people he considers victims of politically motivated prosecutions. The proposal was expected to potentially include people convicted or accused in connection with the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol. Another controversial proposal involved protection from certain tax audits for Trump and members of his family.

Blanche makes changes to secure confirmation

Blanche eventually addressed the concerns surrounding those proposals. In a written directive, he abandoned the proposed political “anti-weaponisation” fund. He also clarified that an agreement concerning tax-audit immunity for Trump, his two eldest sons and the Trump Organization would apply only to previous tax years rather than future tax filings. Those changes helped reduce opposition among Republican senators and cleared the way for his confirmation.

Previous role as acting attorney general

Blanche had taken over as acting attorney general after Trump dismissed Pam Bondi in April. Since assuming the position, he has been involved in several politically sensitive matters involving the Justice Department. Democrats have accused the administration of using federal law-enforcement powers against political opponents, describing the broader approach as a campaign of political “retribution.” The administration and its supporters have disputed such characterizations. Blanche has also faced criticism surrounding the Justice Department's handling of investigative files connected to Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted sex offender whose case has attracted continued public attention.

Blanche’s legal work for Trump

Before entering government, Blanche was part of Trump's legal defence team in several high-profile cases. He represented Trump during the New York criminal trial involving allegations concerning a payment made to adult-film actress Stormy Daniels. Blanche also worked on Trump's defence in two federal cases brought by special counsel Jack Smith. Those federal cases concerned allegations that Trump improperly retained classified documents after leaving the White House and that he attempted to overturn the outcome of the 2020 presidential election. With his Senate confirmation now complete, Blanche formally takes charge of the US Department of Justice at a politically consequential moment. His previous work for Trump, his role in the administration and the concerns raised by both Democrats and some Republicans are expected to keep his leadership under close scrutiny.

What does Todd Blanche’s confirmation mean?

Todd Blanche's confirmation gives the Trump administration a permanent attorney general after months of interim leadership. His background as Trump's former lawyer is likely to remain a central part of public and congressional scrutiny as he directs the Justice Department and oversees federal law-enforcement policy.
