Istanbul, Turkey — Turkish officials have announced that a ballistic missile launched from Iran and detected heading toward Turkish airspace was destroyed by NATO air and missile defence systems deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean on March 4, 2026. The missile reportedly crossed Iraqi and Syrian airspace before being intercepted, marking the first time a missile fired from Iran has been neutralised near NATO territory.
Turkey’s Ministry of National Defence said the ballistic munition was detected early and engaged “in a timely manner” by NATO assets, preventing it from entering Turkish territory. Debris from the interceptor fell in the Dörtyol district of Hatay province, close to the Syrian border, but authorities confirmed that no casualties or injuries were reported.
The incident drew swift responses from Western governments. NATO condemned Iran’s actions and reaffirmed its defence commitments to alliance members, while the United States expressed full support for Turkey’s security. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reportedly spoke with Turkey’s Foreign Minister to underscore Washington’s backing amid the broader conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.
Turkish authorities also warned Tehran against further escalation, stressing that Ankara reserves the right to respond to any hostile acts against its territory. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan emphasised that Turkey was taking all necessary precautions with NATO consultation to safeguard its airspace and borders.
So far, Iran has not officially acknowledged firing the missile, and Tehran’s military statements have rejected claims of targeting Turkey, maintaining respect for Turkish sovereignty as the conflict continues to escalate in the region.
