Turkmenistan has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening international cooperation and reforming global governance systems during a high-level meeting of the Group of Friends of Global Governance held at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The event, organized under the theme “Reforming and Improving Global Governance, Working Together to Address Global Challenges,” brought together representatives from multiple countries to discuss solutions for emerging international issues.
The Turkmen delegation was led by Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov, who emphasized the importance of collective action and stronger multilateral institutions in addressing modern global challenges. During his remarks, Meredov expressed appreciation to Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi for the invitation and reiterated Turkmenistan’s support for the Global Governance Initiative introduced by Chinese President Xi Jinping during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit in 2025.
According to the minister, Turkmenistan views its participation in the Group of Friends of Global Governance as an important opportunity to advance constructive international dialogue through the United Nations framework. He stressed that global governance systems must evolve to better respond to geopolitical tensions, economic uncertainty, technological changes, and emerging security threats affecting countries worldwide.
One of the key proposals presented by Turkmenistan focused on preventive governance. The country proposed the establishment of a Multilateral Platform for Preventive Governance designed to identify and address potential conflicts and crises before they escalate. Officials stated that preventive diplomacy and early intervention mechanisms are essential for maintaining international peace and stability in an increasingly complex global environment.
The second proposal highlighted the importance of strengthening international law. Turkmenistan continues to advocate for declaring 2028 as the International Year of Law under the United Nations framework. The initiative aims to encourage global discussions on the role of legal norms, international agreements, and institutional cooperation during a period of rapid global transformation and uncertainty.
The third proposal centered on digital governance and the reliability of information. Turkmenistan called for the adoption of universal principles to ensure data accuracy and transparency, while also promoting international mechanisms for verifying information used in policymaking. The government argued that reliable data has become a critical foundation for effective governance and informed decision-making across all sectors.
Concluding the presentation, Turkmenistan emphasized that preventive governance, respect for international law, trusted data systems, and inclusive implementation of initiatives must work together as a unified framework for responsible global cooperation. Officials noted that the effectiveness of international governance will ultimately depend on its ability to deliver practical solutions, strengthen trust among nations, and address real-world challenges through dialogue and partnership.
