Turkmen Scientists Explore Nature’s Secrets of Longevity

Turkmen Scientists Explore Nature’s Secrets of Longevity

Post by : Shakul

Scientists in Turkmenistan are making significant progress in the study of aging and longevity through innovative research that combines biomimetics and nutrigenomics. Researchers at the International Scientific-Technological Park of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan are investigating how natural biological systems and plant-based compounds can help unlock the mechanisms behind healthy aging and long life.

The project is being led by Durdymyrat Gadamov, Director of the International Scientific-Technological Park, and Altyn Rakhmanova, Head of the Biotechnology Laboratory. Their work focuses on understanding how organisms survive harsh environmental conditions while maintaining biological functions over extended periods. The research aims to transform natural observations into practical applications for medicine and biotechnology.

A key subject of the study is the Central Asian tortoise, scientifically known as Testudo horsfieldii. This species has attracted scientific interest because it demonstrates what researchers describe as “negligible senescence,” meaning it experiences very slow biological aging while preserving essential functions for decades. Scientists believe the tortoise may provide valuable clues about the biological foundations of longevity.

Genetic investigations suggest that the remarkable resilience of the tortoise is linked to advanced DNA repair mechanisms and highly effective sirtuin proteins. These proteins play an important role in maintaining cellular stability and protecting tissues from oxidative stress. Understanding these natural defense systems could open new pathways for developing treatments that support healthy aging in humans.

Researchers are also examining Turkmenistan’s rich biodiversity and traditional medicinal plants. The extensive reference work “Medicinal Plants of Turkmenistan” serves as an important scientific resource for identifying bioactive compounds with potential anti-aging properties. Studies indicate that naturally occurring substances such as flavonoids, saponins and glycosides may influence the same biological pathways responsible for cellular protection and longevity.

To advance the research, scientists are combining traditional botanical knowledge with modern technologies including genetic analysis, computational modeling and phytochemical investigations. Computer-based simulations allow researchers to predict how specific compounds interact with biological systems before laboratory testing begins, improving efficiency and accuracy.

The ultimate goal is to transform scientific discoveries into innovative products for the pharmaceutical and food industries. By integrating nature-inspired science with cutting-edge biotechnology, Turkmen researchers hope to contribute to the global field of gerontology and develop new solutions that promote healthier, longer lives for future generations.
