Hanoi: Typhoon Bualoi struck Vietnam’s central coast on Monday, leaving at least eight people dead and 17 others missing as it battered the region with powerful winds and heavy rain before moving inland toward Laos.
The storm first moved along Vietnam’s northern central coastline, bringing waves as high as eight metres, according to the national weather agency. By the time it made landfall in Nghe An province early on Monday, it had already caused widespread damage to homes, power lines, and roads.
Officials confirmed that 17 fishermen went missing after two boats were hit by massive waves off Quang Tri province. Another vessel also lost contact during the storm. “I stayed awake all night fearing the door would be torn off by strong winds,” said Ho Van Quynh, a resident of Nghe An, describing the terrifying hours.
Local media reported that Ninh Binh province suffered the heaviest toll, with eight deaths and seven injuries caused by collapsing structures and falling trees. In Hue city, one person was swept away by floodwaters, while another victim in Thanh Hoa province was killed by a falling tree.

By late morning, the typhoon weakened as it crossed into Laos, with wind speeds dropping to 74 kph from the 117 kph recorded at landfall. Still, the storm’s aftermath was severe. Nearly 250 houses were damaged, close to 1,400 hectares of crops were flooded, and several regions remained cut off due to blocked roads.
Authorities evacuated more than 28,500 people before the storm hit, while airports in four central provinces were closed, leading to widespread flight cancellations and delays. The disaster management agency has warned of further risks of flash floods and landslides, as rainfall is expected to reach up to 500 millimetres in several regions through Tuesday.
Vietnam frequently faces destructive typhoons due to its long coastline along the South China Sea. Just days earlier, Bualoi had swept through the Philippines, where it left at least 10 people dead before heading west.
