The famous Government Rose Garden in Udhagamandalam is once again attracting large numbers of tourists during the summer festival season with its breathtaking display of colorful and fragrant roses. Located on the beautiful slopes of Elk Hill in the Nilgiris district, the garden has become one of the most visited tourist attractions in Tamil Nadu during the annual Rose Show celebrations.
Visitors walking through the terraced garden are welcomed by thousands of blooming roses arranged carefully across green pathways, pergolas, arches, and decorative bowers. The garden currently features nearly 4,000 varieties of roses, making it one of the largest rose collections in India. Tourists from different parts of the country are arriving in Ooty to witness the spectacular floral beauty during the peak summer tourism season.
One of the most talked-about attractions in the garden is the famous Blue Moon rose, which is linked to local folklore and believed by many visitors to bring luck and fulfill wishes. Several other unique roses with striking names such as Black Gold, Sweet Promise, and Black Magic are also drawing attention. The garden is additionally known for roses named after well-known political leaders and historical personalities including former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, and Jawaharlal Nehru.
The Government Rose Garden was established in 1995 to commemorate the Centenary Flower Festival and has since become an important symbol of horticultural tourism in the Nilgiris region. Maintained by the Tamil Nadu Horticulture Department, the garden is carefully managed throughout the year to preserve rare species and maintain the beauty of the floral landscape.
Officials said the annual Rose Show forms part of a larger summer festival celebrated across the Nilgiris district. Along with the Rose Show in Udhagamandalam, visitors also attend the Vegetable Show in Kotagiri, the Fruit Show at Sims Park in Coonoor, and the Spices Show in Gudalur. These festivals significantly boost tourism and local business activities every year.
Tourism experts believe the rose garden plays a major role in promoting eco-tourism and nature tourism in Tamil Nadu. The cool climate of Ooty combined with the scenic floral arrangements creates a memorable experience for families, photographers, and flower enthusiasts visiting the hill station during the summer holidays.
Local authorities are expecting record tourist arrivals this year as improved travel facilities and pleasant weather continue to attract domestic and international visitors. The colorful atmosphere, fresh mountain air, and fragrance of thousands of roses have turned the Government Rose Garden into one of the most iconic summer destinations in South India.
