UI Chat Leak Sparks Outrage Over Campus Safety

UI Chat Leak Sparks Outrage Over Campus Safety

Post by : Shakul

A major controversy has erupted in Indonesia after viral chat messages allegedly involving students from the University of Indonesia sparked widespread outrage and renewed concerns over sexual harassment on campuses.

Screenshots of group chats reportedly involving 16 law students surfaced online, containing explicit language, inappropriate jokes, and objectification of female students and lecturers. The posts quickly gained traction on social media, drawing strong public condemnation.

The incident prompted students to organize a forum on campus in Depok, where participants expressed anger and demanded accountability from the accused individuals, some of whom reportedly held positions in student organizations.

The university’s student body, BEM UI, called for strict action, including ethics hearings and possible expulsion of those involved. They also urged the administration to thoroughly investigate not only this case but also other unresolved sexual violence complaints within the institution.

In response, the university confirmed that it has launched an internal investigation through its anti-sexual violence task force and has already taken initial action by revoking the organizational memberships of several students linked to the case.

The administration stated that if violations are confirmed, disciplinary measures could include academic sanctions up to expulsion. It also indicated the possibility of involving law enforcement authorities if criminal elements are identified during the investigation.

The case has reignited a broader debate about campus safety, gender respect, and the need for stronger mechanisms to prevent and address sexual misconduct in educational institutions.

Students and activists are now calling for systemic reforms, stricter enforcement of policies, and greater awareness to ensure safer environments for all individuals on campus.
