On the occasion of World Environment Day and World Ocean Day, General Secretary and President To Lam called for stronger national and global efforts to protect the environment, accelerate green transformation, and ensure the long-term sustainability of oceans. In a policy article, he emphasized that environmental protection must become a central pillar of economic development and national security.
President To Lam noted that the world is facing unprecedented environmental challenges, including global warming, rising sea levels, biodiversity loss, extreme weather events, and growing marine pollution. He warned that continued dependence on resource-intensive development models could threaten both economic prosperity and the ecological systems that sustain human life.
For Vietnam, the issue is especially urgent. With more than 3,260 kilometers of coastline and millions of people living in coastal and river delta regions, the country remains highly vulnerable to climate change, saltwater intrusion, coastal erosion, and natural disasters. The government believes that sustainable development can only be achieved by integrating environmental protection into every stage of economic planning.
The Vietnamese leader highlighted the country’s commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, promoting renewable energy, reducing plastic pollution, protecting biodiversity, and expanding the circular economy. He stressed that green growth should not be viewed as an external obligation but as a strategic necessity for Vietnam’s future prosperity and competitiveness.
A major focus of the strategy is the development of a modern and sustainable marine economy. Vietnam plans to expand green seaports, offshore renewable energy projects, marine biotechnology, eco-tourism, and sustainable fisheries management. Authorities also aim to strengthen efforts against illegal fishing while protecting marine ecosystems and supporting the livelihoods of coastal communities.
The article also outlined the importance of restoring forests, wetlands, and other natural ecosystems while improving climate resilience in vulnerable regions. Investments in environmental monitoring, artificial intelligence, digital mapping, and climate forecasting are expected to play a key role in strengthening environmental governance and disaster preparedness.
President To Lam concluded by calling for collective action from governments, businesses, communities, and citizens. He urged every Vietnamese citizen to contribute through practical actions such as planting trees, reducing single-use plastics, conserving energy, protecting water resources, and adopting greener lifestyles to help build a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable future for the nation.
