Vietnam Eyes Hollywood-Style Blockbuster Film Industry

Vietnam Eyes Hollywood-Style Blockbuster Film Industry

Post by : Shakul

Vietnam's film industry is preparing for its next stage of development, with experts saying the country is ready to produce blockbuster films capable of competing on the international stage. The discussion took place during the 4th Da Nang Asian Film Festival (DANAFF IV), where filmmakers, government officials, industry experts, and artists from Vietnam and the United States gathered to explore the future of Vietnamese cinema.

The workshop, titled "The American Film Industry – A Successful Model and Lessons for Vietnam," focused on how Vietnam can build a professional, sustainable, and globally competitive film ecosystem inspired by Hollywood's success while maintaining its own cultural identity.

Experts Highlight Hollywood's Complete Film Ecosystem

Industry experts explained that Hollywood's global success is built on more than filmmaking alone. Its strength comes from an integrated ecosystem that combines creative storytelling, financing, production, advanced technology, distribution networks, marketing strategies, and intellectual property management into one sustainable industry.

According to the Vietnam Film Development Promotion Association, Vietnam should study these successful practices not to copy Hollywood directly but to adapt proven ideas that match the country's own resources, culture, and long-term development goals.

Vietnamese Cinema Showing Strong Growth

Experts noted that Vietnamese cinema has experienced remarkable growth in recent years. Domestic box office revenues continue to rise, while several locally produced films have achieved major commercial success and gained recognition at international film festivals.

The country's growing filmmaking capabilities were also highlighted through international collaborations, including the production of "Kong: Skull Island," which demonstrated Vietnam's ability to support large-scale Hollywood productions using local locations, crews, and technical expertise.

Why is Vietnam looking to Hollywood as a model?

Hollywood is widely regarded as the world's most successful film industry because it has developed a complete ecosystem that connects creativity, financing, production, technology, global distribution, marketing, and intellectual property management. Vietnamese experts believe studying this model can help Vietnam strengthen every stage of its own film industry while preserving its cultural identity and creative independence.

Can Vietnam produce international blockbuster films?

Experts believe Vietnam now possesses many of the essential foundations required to produce globally competitive films. The domestic film market has expanded rapidly, local productions continue achieving record-breaking revenues, and Vietnamese filmmakers have gained valuable experience through international collaborations. With continued investment in talent, technology, and infrastructure, Vietnam is considered capable of producing blockbuster films for worldwide audiences.

What challenges remain for Vietnam's film industry?

Despite significant progress, experts say Vietnam still needs stronger cooperation between filmmakers, investors, distributors, educational institutions, and government agencies. Building a sustainable industry also requires improved film distribution, professional training, better financing opportunities, and stronger international partnerships while continuing to develop original Vietnamese stories.

Artificial Intelligence Cannot Replace Human Creativity

Professor Nguyen Thi Lien Hang of Columbia University emphasized that technology and artificial intelligence can support filmmaking, but they cannot replace the originality, emotional depth, and creative vision that human storytellers bring to cinema.

She encouraged Vietnam to embrace technological innovation while ensuring that filmmakers continue creating authentic stories reflecting the country's culture, history, and people.

Vietnam is increasingly positioning its film industry as an important part of the country's cultural and creative economy. Government strategies identify cinema as a key sector capable of generating economic growth while promoting Vietnam's heritage, tourism, and national identity to international audiences.

Industry leaders believe that combining creative talent, advanced technology, supportive government policies, international cooperation, and investment in production infrastructure could transform Vietnam into one of Asia's leading filmmaking destinations. Continued participation in global film festivals such as DANAFF is expected to strengthen Vietnam's international presence and attract more global productions.

Film Industry Leaders Call for Long-Term Collaboration

Speakers at the conference agreed that Vietnam's ambition to create globally recognized blockbuster films will require long-term collaboration between filmmakers, investors, educators, technology experts, distributors, and policymakers.

They expressed confidence that with sustained investment and strategic planning, Vietnamese cinema can build a modern film ecosystem capable of producing internationally successful films while preserving the country's unique cultural identity.
