Vietnam, Indonesia Deepen Strategic Partnership

Vietnam, Indonesia Deepen Strategic Partnership

Post by : Shakul

Vietnam and Indonesia have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and expanding regional cooperation during a high-level meeting held on the sidelines of the 48th ASEAN Summit in Cebu, Philippines. On May 8, 2026, Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung met Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto to discuss ways to deepen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two Southeast Asian nations. The meeting highlighted the growing importance of cooperation between Vietnam and Indonesia in maintaining regional stability, economic growth, and ASEAN unity.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Le Minh Hung emphasized that the Vietnamese Government highly values the long-standing friendship and cooperation between Vietnam and Indonesia. He noted that the establishment of a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in March 2025, during the visit of Vietnamese General Secretary To Lam to Indonesia, marked an important milestone in bilateral relations. According to Vietnamese officials, the partnership has created a strong foundation for expanding cooperation in several important sectors and strengthening political trust between the two countries.

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto congratulated Prime Minister Le Minh Hung on his appointment to the new position and expressed his desire to work closely with the Vietnamese Government in the future. President Prabowo stated that Indonesia considers Vietnam one of its important regional partners and believes that stronger cooperation between the two countries will bring long-term benefits to both nations and their people. He also welcomed the positive progress achieved in bilateral relations over recent years.

Both leaders expressed satisfaction with the steady growth in cooperation across major sectors including trade, investment, agriculture, and political relations. They agreed to continue promoting regular high-level exchanges and strengthen collaboration in emerging sectors such as the digital economy, green transformation, renewable energy, and technological development. Officials from both countries believe that expanding cooperation in these areas will support sustainable economic growth and improve regional competitiveness in Southeast Asia.

Trade and economic cooperation remained one of the key topics discussed during the meeting. Vietnam and Indonesia agreed to continue supporting market access for goods from both countries with the aim of increasing bilateral trade to 18 billion US dollars or more in a balanced manner. The leaders also discussed strengthening cooperation in the energy sector, including oil and gas exploration projects, in order to improve regional energy security and support future economic development.

In addition to bilateral matters, the two leaders exchanged views on several regional and international issues of common concern. They emphasized the importance of ASEAN unity, multilateral cooperation, and maintaining ASEAN’s central role in regional affairs. Both Vietnam and Indonesia agreed that ASEAN member states must continue working together to address shared challenges and strengthen the organization’s collective voice on important international issues.

The meeting between Prime Minister Le Minh Hung and President Prabowo Subianto reflected the growing strategic relationship between Vietnam and Indonesia as both countries seek deeper economic cooperation and stronger regional partnerships. Officials stated that the discussions produced positive outcomes and reinforced the shared commitment of both governments to building a stable, peaceful, and prosperous Southeast Asian region through closer bilateral and ASEAN cooperation.
