The body of Edgar Lungu has still not been buried nearly ten months after his death, due to an ongoing dispute between his family and the Zambian government. The unusual situation has drawn attention in both Zambia and South Africa.
Lungu died in June last year in a hospital in Pretoria at the age of 68. His family wanted to bury him in South Africa, while the Zambian government insisted on bringing his body back home for a state funeral.
The disagreement is linked to Lungu’s long-standing political rivalry with current President Hakainde Hichilema. According to the family, Lungu had expressed a wish that Hichilema should not attend his funeral, which is why they opposed a state ceremony in Zambia.
The government, however, argued that a state funeral is important for honoring a former head of state. It went to court to gain custody of the body and prepared a burial site in Zambia, which remains empty as the dispute continues.
The situation took a dramatic turn when authorities briefly took control of the body with help from South African officials. Soon after, a court ordered that the remains be returned to the funeral home, stating that the move was against legal procedures.
Earlier court rulings had supported the Zambian government’s request to repatriate the body, and a date was set for the transfer. However, the recent actions have created further legal complications and may lead to new court proceedings.
The case highlights how political tensions can continue even after a leader’s death. It has also raised questions about legal authority, family wishes, and state responsibility in handling the remains of national leaders.
