A major cross-border vehicle smuggling investigation has gained momentum as a delegation from Bhutan Customs arrived in Kerala to assist Indian authorities. The joint effort is part of Operation Numkhor, a multi-agency probe into illegal vehicle imports that has drawn nationwide attention.
The visiting team, led by senior Bhutanese customs officials, is holding discussions with Indian authorities in Munnar. The focus of the meeting is to exchange intelligence and plan the next phase of action against the suspected smuggling network.
The investigation revolves around vehicles allegedly imported illegally from Bhutan into India and later registered through fraudulent means. Authorities believe that a large number of these vehicles were routed through northeastern states before being used in other parts of the country.
Operation Numkhor has already led to significant seizures, with dozens of luxury cars and high-end motorcycles confiscated in Kerala. Some of these vehicles were reportedly linked to prominent individuals, bringing additional public attention to the case.
Officials estimate that nearly 15,000 vehicles may have been smuggled into India over the years, resulting in tax evasion worth crores of rupees. Investigators have identified hundreds of suspicious registrations, particularly in states like Assam.
The case has also attracted the attention of the Enforcement Directorate, which is examining possible money laundering links. The involvement of multiple agencies highlights the complexity and scale of the operation.
Authorities say the ongoing collaboration between Bhutan and India is crucial for verifying vehicle origin records and strengthening enforcement measures. The investigation is expected to continue with coordinated efforts aimed at dismantling the smuggling network and preventing future violations.
