Nepal is witnessing growing protests across border regions and major cities after the government strictly enforced customs duties on goods entering from India. The move has triggered public anger due to rising costs of essential items and disruption in cross-border trade.
The decision has been implemented under the leadership of Balendra Shah, who recently assumed office. Within weeks of his appointment, the policy has sparked widespread demonstrations, especially in border towns such as Birgunj and in the capital Kathmandu.
For decades, the open border between India and Nepal allowed easy movement of goods and people, benefiting residents who relied on Indian markets for affordable daily essentials. However, the strict enforcement of customs duties on goods valued above NPR 100 has significantly changed this dynamic.
Residents in border areas have expressed concern that the new rule is increasing their financial burden. Many depend on Indian markets for groceries, medicines, and household items, and the new duties ranging from 5 percent to 80 percent have made these products more expensive.
Reports and videos from border checkpoints show heated exchanges between citizens and security personnel. In some instances, even small items such as snack packets have reportedly been seized, leading to frustration among the public and raising questions about the practicality of the policy.
The government has defended the move, stating that the rule is not new but is now being strictly enforced to prevent revenue loss and protect local businesses. Officials argue that frequent cross-border purchases were affecting Nepal’s domestic markets and tax collection.
The situation has also taken a political turn, with opposition parties and even some members of the ruling side criticizing the decision as impractical. Protests have intensified, and there are warnings of larger demonstrations if the policy is not revised, highlighting growing tensions over economic and governance issues in the country.
