Death Penalty Sought In USF Students Murder Case

Death Penalty Sought In USF Students Murder Case

Post by : Shakul

Florida prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against a man accused of killing two doctoral students from Bangladesh who were studying at the University of South Florida. The Hillsborough State Attorney’s Office officially filed a notice to pursue capital punishment against 26-year-old Hisham Saleh Abugharbieh after a grand jury indicted him on two counts of first-degree murder along with several additional criminal charges. The case has shocked both the local community and the international student community due to the tragic deaths of the two young scholars.

The victims, identified as Zamil Limon and Nahida Bristy, were both 27-year-old doctoral students from Bangladesh studying at the University of South Florida in Tampa. According to investigators, the two students disappeared on April 16 under suspicious circumstances. Authorities said Limon was last seen at the off-campus apartment complex where he lived with the suspect, while Bristy was last spotted at a science building located on the university campus. Their sudden disappearance triggered an extensive search operation by local law enforcement agencies.

Investigators later arrested Hisham Saleh Abugharbieh about a week after the students went missing. Since his arrest, he has remained in jail while authorities continue building the case against him. Officials stated that detectives used cellphone location data and license plate reader technology to track the suspect’s movements as well as the location of Limon’s phone. These digital records eventually led investigators to a bridge area where Limon’s body was discovered on April 24.

According to prosecutors, Zamil Limon’s body showed multiple stab wounds and signs that he may have been restrained before his death. Two days later, Nahida Bristy’s body was found in nearby water by a kayaker. The discoveries intensified the investigation and raised serious concerns about the violent nature of the crime. Authorities later gathered forensic evidence from the apartment shared by the suspect and the victims, which prosecutors believe strongly connects the accused to the killings.

During the investigation, detectives questioned both the suspect and another roommate shortly after the students disappeared. Prosecutors stated that investigators noticed a bandage on the suspect’s pinky finger during questioning, although he denied any involvement in Limon’s disappearance. The suspect’s mother later told investigators that her son had struggled with anger issues in the past and had reportedly shown violent behavior toward family members on several occasions.

The investigation also uncovered disturbing evidence inside the apartment complex. According to prosecutors, another roommate informed detectives that the suspect had used a cart overnight on April 16 to move several cardboard boxes from his room to a trash compactor. Detectives later recovered Limon’s wallet, university identification badge, eyeglasses, credit cards, and clothing that appeared to contain blood stains from the trash disposal area.

Authorities later returned to the apartment with a search warrant and reportedly found blood residue leading from the kitchen area into the suspect’s bedroom. Investigators also discovered blood-soaked carpeting inside the room. In Limon’s bedroom, detectives found Nahida Bristy’s university identification card and credit cards. Prosecutors believe the evidence collected from the apartment and surrounding areas will play a major role in the upcoming court proceedings as the case continues to move through the Florida legal system.
