Dhaka Deploys AI To Fight Traffic Chaos

Dhaka Deploys AI To Fight Traffic Chaos

Post by : Shakul

Dhaka has launched its first artificial intelligence-powered traffic enforcement system in a major attempt to reduce chronic congestion and improve road discipline in one of the world’s most overcrowded cities. The initiative marks a significant shift in Bangladesh’s urban traffic management strategy as authorities increasingly turn to technology to address years of transport chaos and road rule violations.

For decades, Dhaka’s traffic system relied heavily on manual policing despite repeated modernization efforts. Traffic officers were often seen physically controlling vehicle movement with ropes and hand signals while drivers ignored traffic lights, pedestrian crossings, and lane discipline. The city, home to more than 22 million residents, has long struggled with severe traffic congestion that regularly disrupts daily life and economic productivity.

The new AI-based system was officially integrated into Dhaka’s traffic monitoring network in April 2026. Authorities connected existing traffic cameras across major intersections to advanced software capable of automatically identifying traffic violations. The technology can reportedly detect offenses such as red-light violations, illegal lane changes, improper parking, and reckless driving behavior without requiring officers to stop vehicles manually.

Police officials say the system is already changing driver behavior across the city. Drivers who violate traffic laws now receive automatic notifications and fines through digital systems linked to vehicle registration databases. One motorist revealed that the owner of his vehicle received a text message and a 2,000 taka fine immediately after the car was caught crossing a red signal by the AI system. Since the rollout, many residents have reportedly become more cautious while driving through monitored areas.

According to Dhaka police, nearly 800 traffic violations were recorded by the system in a single day during the early stages of implementation. Officials stated that only serious offenders are currently being fined while minor violations often result in warnings. Traffic authorities believe the phased approach will help residents gradually adapt to stricter digital enforcement measures.

Inside the city’s traffic control headquarters, human analysts continue to supervise the AI-generated reports to verify detected violations before penalties are issued. Officials explained that the technology is designed to support law enforcement rather than replace human oversight completely. Authorities also hope the system will reduce confrontations between drivers and traffic officers, which have historically been a common issue in Dhaka.

Despite the positive response, officials admitted the project still faces several technical and operational challenges. Some vehicle number plates are reportedly too small, damaged, or blurred for the system to identify accurately. In addition, the current system mainly focuses on motor vehicles, while authorities are still exploring ways to regulate Dhaka’s enormous fleet of pedal rickshaws that dominate many roads across the city.

Transport experts believe the long-term success of the AI initiative will depend not only on technology but also on consistent law enforcement and policy implementation. Analysts have warned that previous traffic modernization projects failed because of poor continuity, weak accountability, and lack of sustained enforcement. Authorities now hope the AI-driven approach will create a more disciplined and efficient transportation environment for Dhaka’s rapidly growing population.
