Ex-Teacher Charged in RM133,550 Money Laundering Case

Ex-Teacher Charged in RM133,550 Money Laundering Case

Post by : Shakul

A former kindergarten teacher has pleaded not guilty to three money laundering charges involving RM133,550 in cash and gold jewellery allegedly connected to a scheme that promised to help relocate a child to New Zealand. The case was heard at the Sessions Court in Shah Alam, where the accused denied all allegations.

The prosecution claims the financial transactions involved proceeds from unlawful activities linked to the relocation arrangement offered to a local woman.

Funds Allegedly Linked to Child Relocation Scheme

According to court documents, the accused allegedly received RM83,550, RM50,000, two gold chains, and a gold pendant from a 39-year-old woman. Investigators believe the payments were made after the complainant was promised assistance in relocating her child to New Zealand for what was described as a safer and better future.

Authorities are investigating whether the money and valuables were obtained through fraudulent representations connected to the relocation proposal.

Transactions Took Place at Multiple Locations

The alleged offences were carried out between January and February last year at bank branches in Bandar Baru Rawang and Kota Kemuning, as well as at a jewellery shop located in Sri Muda, Shah Alam.

Prosecutors allege the financial transactions involved proceeds of unlawful activities, leading to charges under Malaysia's Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.

Serious Penalties Under Malaysian Law

If convicted, the accused could face up to 15 years in prison. The law also provides for a fine of at least five times the value of the alleged unlawful proceeds or RM5 million, whichever amount is higher.

The charges reflect Malaysia's strict legal framework aimed at preventing money laundering and financial crimes involving illegal proceeds.

Court Grants Reduced Bail

The prosecution requested bail of RM30,000 for each charge and sought additional conditions, including surrendering the accused's passport, monthly reporting to the police, and restrictions on contacting prosecution witnesses.

The defence requested lower bail, stating that the accused had recently lost her job, exhausted her savings, and was supporting her ill mother with assistance from family members.

Case Scheduled for Further Proceedings

After hearing both sides, the court granted bail of RM15,000 together with all additional conditions requested by the prosecution. The accused must surrender her passport, report regularly to the nearest police station, and avoid interfering with witnesses.

The court has fixed August 10 for the next case mention as investigations and legal proceedings continue.
