Gaza Crisis Thousands Flee Amid Israel’s Intensifying Ground Offensive

Gaza Crisis Thousands Flee Amid Israel’s Intensifying Ground Offensive

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Thousands of Palestinians continue to flee Gaza City amid Israel’s intensifying ground offensive, launched with the stated aim of defeating Hamas fighters and freeing hostages. The offensive has triggered widespread devastation, displacing tens of thousands and sparking global concern over the humanitarian situation.

Overnight bombings have forced patients and families to abandon hospitals, including the al-Ranitisi children’s hospital, which was reportedly targeted in three separate attacks. Israel’s military has said it is investigating these claims, while also reporting that over 150 “terror targets” across Gaza City were struck in the past two days.

Israel has justified its offensive by pointing to Hamas strongholds in Gaza City, where up to 3,000 fighters are believed to be operating. The military claims its goal is to dismantle these forces and rescue hostages. Yet, the operation has drawn widespread condemnation internationally. Leaders of more than 20 humanitarian organizations have called for urgent intervention, describing the situation in Gaza as “inhuman” and “unconscionable.”

The civilian toll is staggering. Columns of Palestinians are fleeing southwards, many with their belongings on donkey carts, rickshaws, or overcrowded vehicles. Until recently, civilians had only one route to reach a designated “humanitarian area” in al-Mawasi, controlled by Israel. A new evacuation route along the central Salah al-Din road has been announced, but costs remain prohibitively high for many. Renting a small truck can cost nearly $900, and basic tents for families cost over $1,000. Lina al-Maghrebi, a mother of three, shared that she sold her jewelry to afford the journey south.

Even when reaching the designated zones, Palestinians face overcrowding and insufficient support. Many who attempted to move south found no space for their tents and returned north. The UN estimates that around 190,000 people have fled since August, while Israel reports roughly 350,000 displaced. At least 650,000 remain in Gaza City, exposed to ongoing violence.

The military offensive reportedly involves the use of old vehicles modified with explosives, remotely driven to Hamas positions. Meanwhile, families of hostages protested near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s residence, arguing that the offensive could endanger their loved ones still in captivity.

The international response has been sharply critical. UN human rights chief Volker Türk called the offensive “totally and utterly unacceptable,” and UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper described it as “utterly reckless and appalling.” The US, however, expressed cautious support, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio stating that while a negotiated end is preferred, Israel sometimes faces groups like Hamas that cannot be reasoned with.

A recent United Nations Commission of Inquiry accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza, citing sexual and gender-based violence, direct targeting of children, and systematic attacks on cultural, religious, and educational sites. Israel has categorically rejected the report, calling it “distorted and false.”

The conflict began after a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which killed approximately 1,200 people and took 251 hostages. Since then, Gaza’s health ministry reports nearly 65,000 Palestinians killed, almost half women and children. Famine has already been declared in Gaza City, and UN agencies warn that the intensifying military offensive could push civilians into an even deeper humanitarian catastrophe.

The unfolding crisis in Gaza highlights a devastating human toll and a growing need for urgent international intervention. As the world watches, the lives of hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians hang in the balance, caught between military objectives and the right to life and safety.
