Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health has announced major progress in the recovery and expansion of Hat Yai Hospital following severe flood damage suffered during the 2025 floods. Officials confirmed that the hospital has resumed medical services at full capacity significantly faster than expected and is now moving forward with long-term plans to transform the facility into a major healthcare hub for Southern Thailand.
Public Health Minister Pattana Promphat visited Hat Yai Hospital in Songkhla Province together with senior health officials to inspect restoration work and review emergency preparedness systems for future flooding situations. According to the ministry, the hospital’s recovery process has progressed around 20 percent faster than originally planned due to rapid reconstruction efforts and government support.
Authorities revealed that a royal grant of 100 million baht played a major role in restoring critical hospital infrastructure. The funding has been used to renovate the emergency and accident department, strengthen building systems, improve backup electricity systems, and upgrade specialized treatment areas including the bone marrow transplant center and pediatric oncology wards. Officials expect these renovation works to be fully completed by September 2026.
The government is also continuing major infrastructure upgrades to improve the hospital’s resilience against future floods. Around 80 percent of structural restoration work has already been completed. The Provincial Electricity Authority has installed a dedicated emergency power line and backup energy systems, including a 1,200 KVA generator capable of supplying electricity to multiple service buildings during emergencies.
Hospital authorities have additionally improved water supply and medical support systems. Ten new water pump buildings have been constructed while a reverse osmosis system capable of producing 2,000 liters of clean drinking water per hour has been installed. The hospital has also upgraded its liquid oxygen storage systems and relocated backup medical gas systems to safer areas. Communication systems and emergency radio networks have also been modernized to ensure uninterrupted operations during disasters.
Hat Yai Hospital is simultaneously expanding its advanced medical services through the development of seven specialized centers of excellence. These include cancer treatment, cardiovascular care, stroke treatment, neonatology, emergency services, laparoscopic surgery, and organ transplantation. The hospital is integrating smart medical technologies and international-standard automated medical systems to improve treatment accuracy and healthcare efficiency.
As part of its long-term expansion strategy, the government is moving ahead with the “Hat Yai Hospital 2” project on a 130-rai site in Ban Phru Subdistrict. Officials say the new facility will help meet growing healthcare demand in Southern Thailand while supporting medical research, advanced treatment development, and Thailand’s broader health economy goals. Authorities hope the expansion will position Hat Yai as one of the country’s leading regional healthcare centers in the coming years.
