India and Japan have announced a series of new agreements aimed at expanding cooperation in defense, economic security, maritime affairs, and advanced technologies. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi finalized the agreements during the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit held in New Delhi.
Both leaders described the partnership as an important pillar for regional stability and economic growth. They reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening strategic ties while promoting peace, security, and sustainable development across the Indo-Pacific region.
Defense and Technology Cooperation Deepens
During the summit, both countries agreed to collaborate on naval radio antenna systems and adopted a joint roadmap on economic security. The leaders also announced expanded cooperation in artificial intelligence, semiconductors, shipbuilding, critical technologies, and renewable energy projects including biogas development.
Prime Minister Modi said India and Japan now view economic security as an essential component of national security. The new agreements are expected to strengthen industrial cooperation while improving technological innovation and supply chain resilience.

Economic Partnership Continues to Grow
Japan remains one of India's largest foreign investors and continues supporting major infrastructure projects, including the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor. Around 1,400 Japanese companies currently operate in India, with nearly half engaged in the manufacturing sector.
Bilateral trade between both countries reached approximately $27.5 billion during India's 2025-26 fiscal year, while Japanese investments totaled about $3.2 billion between April and December 2025. Officials believe stronger economic cooperation will generate additional investment opportunities and create high-quality employment.
Maritime Security and Indo-Pacific Vision
India and Japan also reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific region. The leaders emphasized maritime security cooperation, freedom of navigation, and respect for international law as key priorities for regional peace.
Both countries continue working closely through the Quad grouping alongside the United States and Australia. The partnership aims to promote regional stability, strengthen defense cooperation, and improve disaster response, maritime awareness, and strategic coordination.
China Responds to Regional Cooperation
China reacted to the summit by expressing concern over regional initiatives that it believes promote confrontation rather than cooperation. Beijing stated that the Asia-Pacific region should focus on peace, economic development, and collaboration instead of division.
Despite differing regional perspectives, India and Japan reaffirmed that their partnership is focused on enhancing stability, economic growth, technological innovation, and mutual prosperity through constructive cooperation.
Future Roadmap for Bilateral Relations
Officials from both countries will continue implementing the newly signed agreements over the coming years. Future cooperation is expected to expand across defense manufacturing, digital technologies, semiconductor supply chains, green energy, infrastructure development, and investment promotion.
The summit further strengthened one of Asia's most significant strategic partnerships, reflecting the growing importance of India-Japan cooperation in addressing regional security challenges and supporting long-term economic development.
