Students in several major Indonesian cities staged protests this week to express their opposition to a range of government policies. Demonstrators called for stronger civilian control over state institutions and voiced concerns about what they described as excessive government spending on certain national programs.
The protests were held in cities including Jakarta and Medan, attracting student groups from different universities and organizations across the country.
Protesters Demand Civilian Supremacy
In Medan, members of the Indonesian National Student Movement (GMNI) gathered outside the Military District Command headquarters. Protesters carried banners, chanted slogans and called for the restoration of civilian supremacy in national governance.
Student leaders argued that the Indonesian Military should focus on its primary role of national defense rather than becoming involved in civilian administration and public affairs.
Concerns Over Military Involvement
GMNI Medan chairman Damses Sianturi stated that the military's role has expanded beyond its traditional defense responsibilities. Protesters urged authorities to prevent soldiers from being placed in civilian government positions.
According to demonstrators, maintaining a clear separation between military and civilian institutions is essential for strengthening democratic governance in Indonesia.

Criticism of Government Spending
Alongside concerns over military involvement, students also criticized several government initiatives that they believe place pressure on public finances. Among the programs questioned were the free nutritious meal initiative and rural cooperative development projects.
Protesters argued that government resources should be directed toward economic stability and public welfare priorities.
Calls for Economic Stability
Students also urged the government to focus on stabilizing Indonesia's national currency and addressing economic challenges affecting ordinary citizens. Many participants expressed concerns about rising living costs and the broader economic outlook.
Demonstrators said public funds should be used efficiently to support long-term economic growth and social development.
Growing Youth Participation
The rallies highlighted increasing political engagement among young Indonesians. Student organizations said they will continue monitoring government policies and advocating for reforms they believe are necessary to protect democratic values.
The demonstrations remained largely peaceful, although security personnel were deployed around key protest locations.
Debate Continues Nationwide
The protests have sparked broader public debate about the balance between national security, economic priorities and democratic governance. Government officials have yet to issue a detailed response to the students' demands.
Observers say the demonstrations reflect growing public interest in how Indonesia's institutions and resources are managed as the country moves forward with major policy initiatives.
