Iran Says US to Release $12 Billion in Frozen Funds

Iran Says US to Release $12 Billion in Frozen Funds

Post by : Shakul

Iran's top negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf announced that an agreement has been reached with the United States to release approximately $12 billion in frozen Iranian assets. The development comes amid ongoing diplomatic negotiations aimed at easing tensions and addressing several longstanding disputes between the two countries.

The announcement followed recent US measures that temporarily eased sanctions to allow Iranian oil and petrochemical exports until August 21, signaling a possible shift in relations after years of economic restrictions.

Negotiations Continue in Switzerland

Talks involving Iranian, American, Qatari and Pakistani officials continued in Switzerland, where negotiators have been working on a framework for broader cooperation. Iranian officials described the discussions as constructive, despite reports of tensions during some sessions.

According to Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei, negotiations later continued through indirect communication channels after the Iranian delegation chose to exchange messages through mediators rather than participate in a direct quadrilateral session.

Iran Seeks Full Control of Released Funds

Iranian officials stressed that the released funds would be used according to Tehran's own priorities. Baghaei rejected suggestions that the money would be restricted to specific purchases, stating that Iran would have complete freedom over how the assets are spent.

The release of frozen funds is seen as one of the most significant economic gains for Iran since sanctions intensified over its nuclear programme and regional policies.

Lebanon Remains a Key Issue

The situation in Lebanon remains a central topic in ongoing negotiations. Iran warned that it would respond if Israel continued military actions against Hezbollah in Lebanon, while emphasizing support for efforts aimed at securing stability and ending hostilities.

Iranian diplomats indicated that discussions regarding Lebanon and regional security arrangements are expected to continue over the coming days.

Nuclear and Sanctions Discussions Advance

Iran confirmed that new working groups will soon be established to focus on sanctions relief and issues related to its nuclear programme. Officials described these discussions as a crucial step toward building a more comprehensive agreement.

However, Iranian authorities said there is currently no clear timetable for new inspections of nuclear facilities damaged during recent military strikes.

Regional Tensions Continue

Despite diplomatic progress, tensions remain high across the region. Iranian officials accused some regional countries of participating in actions against Iran and warned that legal responses could follow if evidence supports those claims.

At the same time, Israel has maintained a firm position on security issues in Lebanon, highlighting the complex challenges facing negotiators.

Hope for Long-Term Stability

The latest developments have raised hopes for improved relations between Iran and the United States after decades of hostility. While many details remain under discussion, the release of frozen assets and ongoing diplomatic engagement are being viewed as important steps toward reducing tensions and promoting greater regional stability.
