Residents in Karachi are facing a severe gas shortage that is disrupting daily life and forcing people to adopt unusual and risky methods to meet their basic needs. One such method that has recently come to light involves storing cooking gas in plastic balloons.
In several areas, particularly in Orangi Town and Mominabad, locals have started using specially designed balloons to collect gas during short periods when supply is restored. These balloons are then used throughout the day for cooking purposes, helping households manage the ongoing crisis.
Residents say this method is not a choice but a necessity. With gas supply being irregular and pressure remaining low for most of the day, families are struggling to cook meals and carry out routine household tasks.
The balloons used for storage are available in local markets and cost between Rs 1,000 and Rs 1,500. Once filled, they are disconnected from the gas source and stored inside homes, acting as a temporary fuel reserve until the next supply window.
However, safety experts have raised serious concerns about this practice. They warn that storing gas in plastic balloons is extremely dangerous and can lead to explosions if exposed to heat, friction, or even a small spark.
Analysts have described these gas-filled balloons as “mobile bombs,” especially in densely populated areas where homes are closely packed. The risk of fire accidents and large-scale damage is significantly increased due to such unsafe storage methods.
The situation has prompted calls for urgent action from authorities and gas supply companies. Experts believe that improving supply consistency and addressing infrastructure issues is critical to preventing such hazardous practices from spreading further.
The crisis also reflects broader energy challenges, including disruptions in global supply chains. International tensions and instability in key regions have added pressure on fuel availability, indirectly affecting local distribution systems.
As the shortage continues, residents remain caught between daily survival needs and serious safety risks. The situation highlights the urgent need for reliable energy solutions and stronger public safety awareness to prevent potential disasters.
