Malaysia’s total trade in January 2026 rose to RM272.4 billion, driven by strong export performance, according to data released by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).
Chief Statistician Mohd Uzir Mahidin said exports increased by RM24.1 billion, or 19.6 per cent year-on-year, reaching RM146.9 billion. Imports also recorded growth of 5.3 per cent, rising by RM6.3 billion to RM125.5 billion compared with January 2025.
The strong export expansion was mainly driven by higher shipments from Penang, which recorded an increase of RM22.1 billion. Other contributing states included Johor, Perak, Negeri Sembilan, Perlis, and Kuala Lumpur.
However, several states experienced declines in exports, including Melaka, Kedah, Terengganu, Pahang, Selangor, Labuan, Sarawak, Sabah, and Kelantan.
Penang remained Malaysia’s top exporter, accounting for 44.2 per cent of total exports. It was followed by Johor (19.7 per cent), Selangor (14.2 per cent), Sarawak (6.1 per cent), and Kuala Lumpur (3.5 per cent).
On the import side, Penang also led growth with an increase of RM3.7 billion, contributing 25.8 per cent of total imports. Selangor followed closely at 25.1 per cent, while Johor accounted for 21.7 per cent.
The latest trade data reflects continued resilience in Malaysia’s external sector, particularly in manufacturing-driven states such as Penang, which remains a major hub for electrical and electronic exports.
