Malaysia's Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan has said Myanmar's newly appointed government appears more open to discussions and regional recommendations than the previous administration. His remarks came after a recent official visit to Myanmar, where both sides discussed efforts to restore peace and stability under ASEAN's peace framework.
Talks Focus on ASEAN Peace Plan
During his meeting with Myanmar Foreign Minister Tin Maung Swe in Naypyitaw, Mohamad Hasan reviewed progress on ASEAN's Five-Point Consensus. The regional peace plan was introduced after Myanmar's 2021 military takeover but has seen limited implementation over the past several years.
Political Prisoners and Rohingya Crisis Discussed
Malaysia also raised concerns over the release of political prisoners and the humanitarian challenges faced by Rohingya refugees, many of whom are currently living in Malaysia. The foreign minister stressed the importance of addressing these issues alongside broader peace efforts.

ASEAN May Review Peace Strategy
Mohamad Hasan told Parliament that ASEAN leaders have instructed foreign ministers to examine whether adjustments are needed to improve the effectiveness of the Five-Point Consensus. Any proposed changes, however, would require approval from all ASEAN member states before implementation.
Myanmar's New Government Signals Cooperation
Myanmar formed a new government after elections held earlier this year, with military-backed leaders returning to power. While the election faced criticism from several Western governments and opposition groups, Malaysia believes the new administration is showing greater willingness to engage with ASEAN compared to previous interactions.
Regional Peace Remains a Priority
ASEAN continues to push for peaceful dialogue, humanitarian assistance and national reconciliation in Myanmar. The bloc hopes renewed engagement with the country's leadership can help reduce conflict and improve stability across the region.
Outlook for ASEAN Diplomacy
Although challenges remain, Malaysia's latest assessment suggests diplomatic channels are becoming more constructive. Regional leaders believe sustained dialogue and cooperation will be essential for achieving long-term peace and restoring confidence in Myanmar.
