Malaysia Plans Land Route for Durian Exports to China

Government in Talks with Thailand and China

Malaysia is holding discussions with the Thai government and the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) to establish an overland transport route for exporting local durians to China. The initiative is expected to reduce logistics costs and improve market access for Malaysian growers.

Initiative Aims to Support Durian Farmers

Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the proposal is part of the government's efforts to support durian farmers facing increased supply during the current harvest season. Simultaneous harvesting across several states has led to a glut in the domestic market.

Land and Rail Routes Under Discussion

Mohamad said he recently met Thailand's Agriculture Minister, Suriya Juangroongruangkit, to discuss facilitating exports through land and rail networks. Intensive discussions are also underway with China's General Administration of Customs to make the plan a reality.

Lower Costs and Wider Market Reach

The minister said transporting durians by land is expected to be more affordable than air freight, which remains costly for producers. The new route could also help Malaysian exporters reach smaller Chinese cities with significant consumer demand.

Higher Supply Pushes Prices Lower

Mohamad noted that the durian season has taken place simultaneously in Kedah, Penang, Perak, Selangor, Johor and Pahang, increasing supply and putting pressure on farm-gate prices. Consumers, however, are benefiting from lower prices for premium varieties such as Musang King and Black Thorn.

Focus on Agriculture and Food Security

The minister said Johor continues to be a major producer of pineapples, fruits and vegetables. He added that Malaysia is also working to improve food security by increasing domestic production of key commodities, including maize for animal feed, with a target of producing at least 30 percent of national maize demand locally by 2030.
