A new nationwide study has revealed that only 14.7 per cent of Malaysians aged 60 and above are considered to be “ageing well”, highlighting growing concerns over the country’s healthcare system and support structures for the elderly.
The findings come from the National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) 2025, a major government-backed study that assessed the physical, mental, and social well-being of older adults across Malaysia. Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad described the results as a “call to action,” acknowledging that more needs to be done to improve the quality of life for senior citizens.
The survey, which involved over 7,500 respondents, was conducted between July and September 2025 through interviews and clinical assessments, achieving a response rate of over 70 per cent. It marks the second time the NHMS has focused specifically on Malaysians aged 60 and above, following a similar study in 2018.
Malaysia currently has an estimated 4.1 million people in this age group, and the country is projected to become an ageing nation by 2036. Experts warn that without stronger policies and improved healthcare systems, the challenges associated with an ageing population could intensify in the coming years.
The concept of “ageing well” goes beyond physical health and includes factors such as independence, mental well-being, financial security, and social participation. The low percentage suggests that many elderly Malaysians face difficulties in maintaining a high quality of life.
The Ministry of Health stated that the findings will be used to guide future policies and improve support systems for older persons. A more detailed report is expected to be released in the coming months, providing deeper insights into the challenges faced by Malaysia’s ageing population.
The study underscores the urgent need for comprehensive strategies, including better healthcare access, community support, and long-term care planning, to ensure that more Malaysians can age with dignity and well-being.
