Muslims across the world have welcomed Muharram, the first month of the Islamic or Hijri calendar. Considered one of the four sacred months in Islam, Muharram is a time dedicated to prayer, reflection, charity and spiritual growth. Unlike festive New Year celebrations, the Islamic New Year is generally observed with peace, devotion and remembrance.
Believers use this month to strengthen their faith and renew their commitment to good deeds.
Muharram Holds Great Religious Importance
Muharram is regarded as one of the holiest months in Islam. During this sacred period, Muslims are encouraged to increase acts of worship, offer charity, seek forgiveness and avoid conflict. Islamic teachings place special emphasis on maintaining peace and strengthening one's relationship with God.
Many families also spend time reflecting on personal goals and spiritual resolutions for the year ahead.
Ashura Is the Most Significant Day
The tenth day of Muharram, known as Ashura, holds deep historical and religious importance. It commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, who was killed in the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD in present-day Iraq.
For many Muslims, especially Shia communities, Ashura is observed through mourning ceremonies, religious gatherings and remembrance processions.
Karbala Becomes the Center of Observance
Thousands of pilgrims have already arrived in Karbala, Iraq, to visit the holy shrines of Imam Hussein and Imam Abbas. Religious ceremonies, prayers and gatherings continue throughout the month as worshippers pay tribute to the sacrifices made in Islamic history.

Different Traditions Across the Muslim World
Muharram is observed differently across countries and Islamic traditions. While Shia Muslims organise mourning processions and remembrance events, many Sunni Muslims mark the month through fasting, prayers, Quran recitation and charitable activities.
Despite different practices, the central message remains one of faith, sacrifice, patience and compassion.
A Time for Peace and Self-Reflection
Religious scholars encourage Muslims to use Muharram as an opportunity for self-improvement, forgiveness and helping those in need. The sacred month reminds believers of the importance of justice, unity and moral responsibility.
As Muharram begins, millions of Muslims worldwide continue to observe the month with devotion, humility and hope for peace.
