The High Court has detailed the reasons behind the sentence imposed on former Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in the RM2.2 billion 1MDB case. Trial judge Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah stated that public interest and the need to deter future crimes were major considerations when determining the punishment.
Massive Financial Scandal Cited
According to the judgment, the 1MDB scandal became one of the largest financial corruption and money laundering cases in modern history. The court noted that the financial impact continues to affect Malaysia, with billions of ringgit in debt obligations still outstanding and future generations expected to bear part of the burden.
Damage to Malaysia’s Global Reputation
The judge said the scandal severely damaged Malaysia’s international image. The case attracted global attention and led to the country being associated with large-scale corruption, creating long-term reputational consequences on the international stage.
Abuse of High Office and Public Trust
The court emphasized that Najib was not a minor official but a leader who held multiple influential positions, including prime minister, finance minister and chairman of 1MDB’s advisory board. The judgment stated that he abused the trust placed in him and played a central role in decisions that enabled questionable transactions.
Lack of Remorse Influenced Decision
Another significant factor was Najib’s lack of remorse. The court observed that he continued to place responsibility on others rather than accepting accountability for the scandal. The judge concluded that evidence presented during the trial showed his involvement in the movement of funds linked to 1MDB.
Public Service Record Not Enough
While acknowledging Najib’s nearly five decades of public service and his tenure as prime minister, the court ruled that these contributions could not outweigh the seriousness of the offences. The need to send a strong message against corruption was considered more important than his previous service record.
Appeal Process Still Ongoing
Najib is currently serving a reduced prison sentence in the SRC International case. The court ordered that his 15-year sentence in the 1MDB case begin after completion of the SRC sentence. He has already filed an appeal against the 1MDB conviction and sentence, with further legal proceedings expected in the coming months.
