Torrential rainfall across North Bengal has caused major disruption in Darjeeling district after a temporary bridge over the Balason River at Dudhia collapsed. The incident has severely affected road connectivity between Siliguri, Mirik and several nearby areas as rivers continue to swell due to continuous rainfall.
Authorities said nearly 200 mm of rain was recorded in parts of the hills and adjoining plains, resulting in rising river levels, landslides and damage to important infrastructure across the region.
Dudhia Bridge Washed Away by Floodwaters
The temporary hume pipe bridge at Dudhia collapsed after water levels in the Balason River rose sharply following continuous rainfall. The structure had been built after the original Dudhia iron bridge was washed away during floods in October last year.
With the bridge no longer operational, direct connectivity between Siliguri and Mirik has been cut off. Officials have advised travelers to use alternative routes until restoration work begins.
Landslides Hit Key Highways
Several landslides were reported at Tindharia and Paglajhora, leading to the closure of parts of National Highway 110 connecting Siliguri and Kurseong. The road blockage has disrupted daily travel and transportation across the hills.
However, authorities confirmed that routes including Rohini Road, Pankhabari Road, Peshok Road and roads connecting Siliguri with Kalimpong remain open for traffic.
Toy Train Services Suspended
The heavy rain has also affected the iconic Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. Railway authorities announced the cancellation of all toy train services scheduled for the day due to safety concerns and weather-related disruptions.

Weather Department Issues Alerts
The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar districts, warning of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over the next few days.
Orange alerts remain in place for Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Cooch Behar districts, where thunderstorms, strong winds and intense rain are expected to continue.
Authorities Begin Restoration Planning
Government officials said restoration work will begin immediately after river levels recede. Engineering teams have already been deployed to assess damage and prepare emergency measures.
The state government is also continuing construction of a permanent bridge at Dudhia, a project worth over ₹51 crore that is expected to be completed by February 2027.
More Rain May Worsen Situation
Weather experts have warned that dense cloud formations over Bhutan and Sikkim could bring additional rainfall in the coming days. This may increase the risk of fresh landslides, flooding and further damage to roads and bridges across North Bengal.
Residents and travelers have been advised to remain cautious as authorities continue monitoring river levels and weather conditions around the clock.
