Prabowo Admits Challenges in Free Meal Scheme

Prabowo Admits Challenges in Free Meal Scheme

Post by : Shakul

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has admitted that the government’s free meal program is facing serious challenges despite its large-scale rollout across the country.

Speaking during an event in East Java, Prabowo said the free nutritious meal scheme “comes with many problems” and acknowledged the difficulties involved in managing such a massive national program.

The initiative, launched in January 2025, was designed to combat malnutrition and food insecurity among children and vulnerable communities. The government claims the program had already reached more than 61 million people by March 2026.

However, the project has faced criticism after thousands reportedly fell ill due to hygiene concerns linked to meal distribution. Critics and activists have called for stricter monitoring and temporary suspension of the scheme in some areas.

The program also faced financial pressure after Indonesia reduced meal distribution from six days a week to five in order to save around 40 trillion rupiah amid the economic impact of the Middle East conflict.

Prabowo defended the program during his speech, saying many ordinary citizens, farmers, and families had requested the government not to stop the free meal initiative because it was helping children receive proper nutrition.

At the same time, Indonesia Corruption Watch filed a complaint involving alleged irregularities in halal certification procurement linked to the program’s budget. Reports claimed there were discrepancies worth nearly 50 million dollars.

Prabowo warned that anyone found abusing authority or violating rules within the project would face strict disciplinary action and removal from office.

Indonesia continues to battle child malnutrition and stunting, with more than 20 percent of children reportedly affected by long-term nutritional problems.
