Qatar Calls for Greater Youth Role in Humanitarian Law

Qatar Calls for Greater Youth Role in Humanitarian Law

Post by : Shakul

Qatar participated in organizing a high-level event focused on youth leadership in international humanitarian law during the 62nd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva. The event brought together diplomats, international organizations, civil society representatives and experts to discuss the growing role of young people in promoting humanitarian values and peacebuilding.

The gathering was jointly organized by the Permanent Mission of Qatar to the United Nations in Geneva, alongside the missions of Jordan and Brazil, with support from the QatarDebate Center.

Focus on Strengthening Humanitarian Law

Speaking during the event, Qatar's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Dr. Hind Abdulrahman Al Muftah, stressed the need for stronger global commitment to international humanitarian law.

She said governments carry the primary responsibility for ensuring compliance with humanitarian principles, while international organizations and civil society groups also play an important role in supporting accountability and protecting civilians during armed conflicts.

Qatar Reaffirms Global Commitment

Dr. Al Muftah reaffirmed Qatar's commitment to promoting respect for international humanitarian law at national, regional and international levels. She highlighted Qatar’s active participation in global humanitarian initiatives aimed at improving protection for civilians affected by conflicts.

She also noted Qatar’s role as co-chair of a key International Committee of the Red Cross initiative focused on humanitarian law and peacebuilding.

Human Rights Resolution Highlighted

During her address, Dr. Al Muftah highlighted a Human Rights Council resolution adopted in October 2025 concerning the protection of women and children affected by armed conflict.

International Experts Join the Dialogue

The event featured contributions from senior diplomats and humanitarian experts from several countries and organizations. Representatives from Jordan, Brazil, the International Committee of the Red Cross and QatarDebate Center shared perspectives on humanitarian challenges and youth engagement.

Participants exchanged ideas on improving awareness and implementation of humanitarian principles in conflict-affected regions.

Youth Seen as Drivers of Positive Change

A major focus of the discussion was the role of young people in advancing humanitarian values and supporting peaceful societies. Speakers emphasized that youth can contribute significantly to promoting respect for international law and encouraging dialogue across communities.

The event encouraged greater investment in education, awareness campaigns and leadership opportunities for young people worldwide.

Building a More Peaceful Future

Participants agreed that strengthening youth engagement is essential for addressing future humanitarian challenges. Through partnerships with international organizations and civil society groups, Qatar continues to support initiatives aimed at protecting civilians and promoting peace.

The Geneva event highlighted the growing recognition that young leaders can play a vital role in building a more responsible, peaceful and humanitarian future.
