An 88-year-old man has died after sustaining critical injuries in a fire that broke out at a residential flat on Race Course Road in Singapore. The victim passed away on Wednesday, two days after the incident, which left five people trapped inside the apartment. The fatal fire occurred on Monday at a fifth-floor unit in Block 684, Race Course Road. Emergency responders rushed to the scene after receiving reports of smoke and flames coming from the apartment.
Authorities said five people, aged between 55 and 88, were taken to hospital following the incident. The elderly man was found unconscious when rescuers reached him and remained in critical condition before succumbing to his injuries on Wednesday. When police officers arrived, one of the bedrooms inside the flat was already engulfed in flames. The apartment was locked, forcing officers to enter the unit by force to rescue a woman trapped inside. Soon after, officers from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) rescued the remaining four occupants. Three of the five victims were discovered unconscious and were immediately transported to hospital for emergency treatment.
As firefighters worked to contain the blaze, approximately 50 residents from the residential block were evacuated as a precautionary measure to ensure their safety. The fire was successfully brought under control using a water jet, preventing it from spreading to nearby units.

Police and fire investigators have launched an investigation to determine what caused the apartment fire. Authorities have not yet released any findings regarding the origin of the blaze. The incident comes only days after another deadly residential fire in Clementi, where one person lost their life and two firefighters were injured while responding to the emergency. During that operation, the Singapore Civil Defence Force revealed that the building's dry rising main system was not functioning properly, forcing firefighters to manually carry hoses up eight floors before tackling the flames.
Officials are continuing their investigation into the Race Course Road fire while reviewing all circumstances surrounding the incident. The tragedy has once again highlighted the importance of fire safety measures, emergency preparedness, and well-maintained firefighting infrastructure in residential buildings. The condition of the surviving victims has not been updated, and authorities are expected to provide further information once investigations progress.
