A South Korean court has ordered the arrest of Lee Man-hee, the 95-year-old founder of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, over allegations that he directed thousands of church followers to participate in political activities ahead of national elections. Prosecutors allege the church illegally encouraged members to join the conservative People Power Party (PPP) between 2021 and 2024.
Authorities say the investigation focuses on possible violations of South Korea's Political Parties Act, which prohibits religious organizations from participating in political activities.
Court Approves Arrest Over Evidence Concerns
The Seoul Central District Court approved Lee's arrest after prosecutors argued there was a risk that evidence could be destroyed if he remained free. Lee appeared in court for the warrant hearing but did not answer reporters' questions regarding the allegations.
Investigators believe Lee was at the center of an organized effort involving more than 50,000 Shincheonji followers who allegedly supported political candidates during the 2022 presidential election and the 2024 parliamentary nomination process.
What Are the Allegations Against Shincheonji?
According to investigators, Lee allegedly instructed church members to register with a political party and participate in candidate selection activities. Authorities describe the case as a potential example of unlawful collaboration between a religious organization and political institutions.
Lee has denied any wrongdoing, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Shincheonji Has Faced Public Scrutiny Before
Shincheonji became internationally known during South Korea's COVID-19 outbreak in 2020, when a large number of early coronavirus cases were linked to church members. The organization has long been criticized by several mainstream Christian groups, which have questioned its practices and influence.

How Could This Case Affect South Korean Politics?
Legal experts say the case could increase public attention on the relationship between religious organizations and political parties in South Korea. If prosecutors prove the allegations, the investigation may prompt stricter oversight of political participation by religious groups and reinforce existing election laws.
Officials have not announced when the next court hearing will take place.
Investigation Continues
South Korean prosecutors continue reviewing evidence related to the alleged political mobilization campaign. Additional witnesses and church officials may be questioned as authorities seek to determine the full extent of the operation.
The outcome of the case could have legal and political implications ahead of future elections in South Korea.
