Taiwan has launched its annual Han Kuang military exercise, a large-scale 10-day defence drill designed to improve battlefield readiness and strengthen commanders' ability to respond to rapidly changing combat situations. The exercise began on Wednesday morning after an underground command centre in Taipei issued operational orders, initiating nationwide combat preparedness activities. Military officials said the exercise includes the dispersal of fighter aircraft, emergency naval deployments and multiple field operations aimed at preparing armed forces for real-world battlefield conditions.
A major objective of this year's exercise is to test how military commanders react when battlefield developments differ from pre-planned scenarios. Instead of following fixed operational scripts, field commanders will face unexpected situations that require immediate assessment, rapid decision-making and revised tactical orders. To improve coordination, Taiwan has introduced a "backbrief" command system for the first time. Based on a practice commonly used by the United States military, junior officers repeat mission instructions back to senior commanders to ensure both sides fully understand operational objectives before execution. Officials said the new approach is intended to strengthen communication and reduce misunderstandings during combat operations.
One of the most notable additions to this year's exercise is the deliberate reduction of mobile internet speeds. Authorities will temporarily limit bandwidth to evaluate how both civilians and government agencies would communicate if digital networks were disrupted during a conflict. The exercise also includes simulations involving the wartime relocation of military weapons stockpiles, mobilisation of civilian manufacturing facilities and naval escort operations along Taiwan's Pacific coastline. These scenarios are designed to prepare for situations in which critical supply routes or military logistics could come under pressure during a conflict.
Taiwanese defence planners say the drills are intended to reflect realistic battlefield conditions rather than scripted training exercises. Officials noted that previous military exercises faced criticism for being overly predictable, prompting changes that introduce more dynamic and challenging scenarios. The current exercise places special emphasis on protecting command centres, ports, logistics hubs and defence industry facilities that could become early targets during any large-scale military confrontation.
More than 20,000 military reservists have been mobilised as part of the nationwide exercise. Training includes mortar operations, infantry combat drills and defensive positioning at multiple locations across Taiwan. The military is also testing how local governments would continue functioning during multiple simultaneous emergencies, including natural disasters and wartime conditions. These resilience exercises are intended to ensure essential public services remain operational even under severe pressure.

For the first time, Taiwan's military is introducing an embedded reporter system to evaluate wartime media operations, public communication and efforts to counter false information during a conflict. Officials said the exercise is designed not only to test the armed forces but also to improve national preparedness by examining how government agencies, civilians and military units would respond together during a large-scale emergency. The Han Kuang military exercise will continue until August 14, with defence authorities closely evaluating operational performance, command coordination and national resilience throughout the training period.
