Thailand and Australia have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation in several important areas including security, economic development, digital governance and the fight against transnational crime. The discussions took place during a meeting between Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister Pakorn Nilapraphan and Australian Ambassador to Thailand Angela Macdonald at Government House in Bangkok on May 14, 2026.
During the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Pakorn thanked the Australian Ambassador for her efforts in strengthening relations between the two countries throughout her diplomatic tenure in Thailand. The Australian side also praised the strong and long-standing partnership shared by Thailand and Australia, highlighting cooperation in military relations, cultural exchange and people-to-people connections.
One of the key topics discussed was Thailand’s ongoing effort to become a member of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, commonly known as the OECD. The Thai government aims to secure OECD membership by 2028 and is currently undergoing technical reviews required under the application process. Deputy Prime Minister Pakorn thanked Australia for continuously supporting Thailand through the Mekong-Australia Partnership framework, which focuses on improving governance, technology and institutional standards.
Australia also commended Thailand’s efforts in applying modern technology to improve public administration and government services. The discussions highlighted how digital transformation and innovation are becoming increasingly important in helping Thailand align with international governance and economic standards. Pakorn, who studied in Australia, also appreciated the Australian government’s continued scholarship support under the Mekong-Australia Partnership programme.
Another major issue discussed during the meeting was the growing threat of transnational crime, especially online fraud networks and cybercrime activities that continue to affect both countries. Both sides agreed on the need for stronger cooperation in intelligence sharing, law enforcement coordination and public awareness programmes to combat these crimes more effectively. Thai authorities also stressed the importance of promoting digital literacy among citizens to reduce online scams and fraud risks.
The two countries further reviewed the achievements made under the Joint Plan of Action for the Thailand-Australia Strategic Partnership covering the period from 2022 to 2025. Officials said the partnership had achieved progress in areas such as economic cooperation, regional security, education and stronger people-to-people relations. Both governments expressed readiness to continue expanding cooperation in future areas of mutual benefit.
The meeting concluded with Deputy Prime Minister Pakorn extending his best wishes to Ambassador Angela Macdonald as her diplomatic term in Thailand approaches its end later this month. Both sides reaffirmed their shared commitment to maintaining close cooperation and strengthening strategic ties between Thailand and Australia in the years ahead.
