Thailand PM Anutin Vows to Resolve Cambodia Border Dispute

Thailand PM Anutin Vows to Resolve Cambodia Border Dispute

Post by : Raman

Thailand's newly appointed Prime Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, has outlined a comprehensive policy agenda aimed at addressing the nation's pressing issues. In his inaugural address to Parliament, Anutin emphasized the government's commitment to resolving the longstanding border conflict with Cambodia, which escalated into a deadly five-day clash in July 2025, resulting in over 260,000 displaced individuals.

To address the border tensions, Anutin proposed a national referendum to reconsider two key agreements with Cambodia: the 2000 land border demarcation and the 2001 maritime cooperation memorandum. He suggested that revoking these agreements could pave the way for a more equitable and peaceful resolution. Additionally, the Prime Minister announced plans to establish an elected constituent assembly tasked with drafting a new constitution to replace the current military-imposed one.

Beyond foreign policy, Anutin's administration is focusing on domestic reforms. Key initiatives include reducing household debt, lowering living costs, combating corruption, and enhancing public services such as disaster preparedness and environmental measures. The government has also introduced a 47 billion baht co-payment scheme to subsidize essential food and consumer goods for eligible citizens.

Anutin's rise to power follows the dismissal of former Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, who faced criticism over her handling of the Cambodia border dispute. Despite challenges from opposition parties, Anutin remains committed to implementing his reform agenda and restoring stability to the nation.

As Thailand navigates these complex issues, the international community watches closely, hoping for a peaceful resolution to the border conflict and meaningful democratic reforms.
