Thailand has announced a major relief measure for private school teachers with the introduction of a direct medical payment system aimed at reducing financial stress and improving access to healthcare services. The initiative is expected to benefit thousands of teachers across the country.
The announcement was made by Prasert Chantharawongthong following a key meeting held on April 23, 2026, in collaboration with the National Health Security Office. The meeting focused on clarifying reimbursement guidelines for medical expenses of private school teachers.
According to the minister, starting from May 1, 2026, private school teachers will no longer need to pay medical expenses upfront. The new system introduces a direct payment mechanism that allows hospitals to receive payments directly, significantly reducing the financial burden on teachers.
This reform has been made possible through cooperation between the Office of the Private Education Commission, the NHSO, and public hospitals. The system operates through a clearing house model where the Welfare Fund advances payments and later settles them with hospitals, ensuring seamless healthcare access.
Currently, more than 700 public hospitals across Thailand have joined the program, and efforts are underway to expand participation further. The initiative also includes training sessions for hospitals to ensure accurate and efficient implementation of the reimbursement process.
Under this scheme, private school teachers will receive medical coverage of up to 150,000 baht per person annually. They can access treatment at participating hospitals without any upfront payment, making healthcare more accessible and improving job security.
The government believes this initiative marks a significant step toward improving the quality of life for educators. It reflects a broader commitment to strengthening welfare measures and ensuring that education professionals receive the support they deserve.
