A powerful 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck Central Papua, Indonesia early on Friday. The quake was shallow, which often means shaking is felt more strongly. Agencies are reporting minor aftershocks, but so far, no reports of serious damage or casualties.
Epicentre Location: About 28 kilometres south of the town of Nabire in Central Papua.
Depth: The quake occurred at 10 to 24 kilometres deep, according to local and international reports.
Magnitude Difference: Estimates range from 6.1 to 6.6 magnitude.
Aftershocks: Several smaller tremors followed the main quake, as is common after a quake of this size.
Because the quake was shallow, people in and around Nabire likely felt strong shaking. Simple structures may have been shaken more than usual.
The fact that there are no major reports of damage or casualties is a positive sign.
Aftershocks can occur, sometimes stronger than expected; people should remain alert.
Indonesia lies on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, a zone with many seismic faults and active tectonic plate boundaries.
Earthquakes range from small to strong in this area; many are shallow, which increases the intensity of shaking felt by people.
Monitoring agencies are keeping watch for any stronger aftershocks or new seismic activity.
Local authorities may inspect buildings, roads, and bridges for cracks or damage.
Residents are advised to stay alert, avoid standing under unsecured items, and prepare emergency kits just in case.
A 6.1 magnitude quake early Friday shook Central Papua, near Nabire. Although the quake was shallow and strong, no major injuries or damage have been reported so far. Aftershocks are being felt, and monitoring is ongoing. Authorities and citizens must remain vigilant as further tremors could follow in this seismically active region.
