Cambodia is using hidden cameras, bioacoustic sensors and artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor rare wildlife living deep inside the country's Cardamom Mountains rainforest. Conservationists believe the new technology is providing valuable evidence that endangered animals continue to survive in one of Southeast Asia's most important forest ecosystems.
The project is being led by Conservation International Cambodia with support from forest rangers and local Indigenous communities. The initiative aims to improve wildlife monitoring while strengthening long-term conservation efforts across the protected rainforest.
Hidden Cameras Capture Rare Animal Activity
Hundreds of hidden camera traps have been installed throughout the forest to capture images and videos of animals that are rarely seen by humans. Recent surveys recorded more than 100 wildlife species, including endangered elephants, pangolins, pig-tailed macaques and dholes.
Researchers say these camera traps provide reliable information about animal populations, movement patterns and habitat use, allowing conservation teams to better understand how wildlife is adapting to environmental changes.
AI Listens to Gibbons in the Rainforest
Scientists are also using bioacoustic monitoring devices that record sounds across the forest canopy. Since pileated gibbons spend most of their lives high in the trees, they are difficult to observe with traditional camera traps.
Artificial intelligence has been trained to recognize gibbon calls from thousands of audio recordings. During just six weeks of monitoring, nearly 800 gibbon calls were detected, providing researchers with valuable information about population distribution and forest health.
Local Communities Play an Important Role
Members of local Indigenous communities help researchers decide where cameras and recording devices should be placed. Their knowledge of animal behavior and forest trails has improved the success of wildlife monitoring.

Conservationists say community participation has become one of the strongest parts of the programme because local residents understand the rainforest better than anyone else and remain committed to protecting its biodiversity.
Rainforest Still Faces Serious Threats
Although conservation efforts have reduced poaching and illegal hunting, the Cardamom Mountains continue to face pressure from infrastructure projects, including dam construction and forest clearing. According to conservation groups, thousands of hectares of forest have been lost in recent years.
Researchers believe continuous monitoring through AI and camera technology will provide scientific evidence supporting stronger protection policies for one of Cambodia's largest remaining rainforests.
Technology Offers Hope for Conservation
Experts say combining artificial intelligence with hidden cameras and sound monitoring is transforming wildlife conservation. The technology allows scientists to detect endangered species without disturbing their natural habitat while generating accurate long-term ecological data.
Conservation International hopes the findings will encourage greater investment in rainforest protection and demonstrate the global importance of preserving Cambodia's unique biodiversity for future generations.
