Chinese political dissident Dong Guangping has arrived safely in Canada after making a dangerous escape from China to South Korea in an inflatable dinghy. The activist reportedly landed in Toronto, where he reunited with his wife and daughter after years of separation.
Escape Through Dangerous Waters
Dong was detained by South Korean coast guards in May after crossing the Yellow Sea in a small 3.3-metre inflatable boat. He was questioned for violating immigration laws but later expressed his wish to travel to Canada to reunite with his family, who had already been granted resettlement there.
Long History of Political Persecution
Dong, a former Chinese police officer, has faced repeated imprisonment due to his political activism. He lost his government job after supporting a letter marking the anniversary of the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown and was later jailed multiple times on charges linked to state security and public activism.

Multiple Escape Attempts Before Success
This was Dong's fourth known attempt to flee China. Previous efforts through Thailand, Vietnam and even an attempted swim to Taiwan were unsuccessful, with authorities deporting him back to China on earlier occasions.
Arrival Confirmed by Supporters
Chinese-Canadian activist Sheng Xue confirmed Dong's arrival in Toronto through social media, sharing photographs and saying she had worked for more than a decade to help him leave China safely.
Case Draws International Attention
Dong's successful relocation has renewed global attention on the challenges faced by Chinese political dissidents seeking asylum abroad. Human rights organizations have previously highlighted his repeated detentions and called for stronger protections for activists facing persecution.
