Pakistan Minister Warns of War Over Water Dispute

Pakistan Minister Warns of War Over Water Dispute

Post by : Shakul

Pakistan's Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has issued strong remarks regarding water security, stating that any serious threat to the country's water resources would be viewed as a national security issue. His comments come at a time when tensions between India and Pakistan remain strained over water-sharing concerns.

Speaking to local media, Asif said Pakistan would closely monitor developments related to water flows and take necessary steps if it believed its interests were being threatened. The statement has drawn attention across the region due to its strong tone and security implications.

Dispute Linked to Indus Waters Treaty

The latest remarks come after India suspended participation in the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty following the April 2025 terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people. New Delhi has maintained that the treaty will remain suspended until concrete action is taken against cross-border terrorism.

The agreement, brokered by the World Bank, has historically governed the sharing of water resources from the Indus River system between the two neighboring countries.

Pakistan Faces Growing Water Challenges

Alongside concerns about regional water sharing, Pakistan is also dealing with a serious domestic water crisis. Several provinces, particularly Sindh and Balochistan, have reported shortages that are affecting agriculture and local communities.

Officials and experts have pointed to declining water availability, aging infrastructure and distribution challenges as major factors contributing to the crisis.

Irrigation Shortages Impact Agriculture

Recent figures from Pakistan's irrigation authorities indicate significant water deficits in key canal systems. Farmers in several regions have expressed concerns about reduced water supplies and the potential impact on crop production during the current season.

Agriculture remains a critical part of Pakistan's economy, making water management a major national priority.

Political and Economic Concerns Rise

Local leaders have warned that prolonged shortages could have serious economic consequences if not addressed quickly. Concerns have also been raised about the need for better water management policies and infrastructure upgrades.

Analysts say that resolving internal water distribution issues will be just as important as addressing external concerns related to regional river systems.

Regional Tensions Remain Sensitive

Water security remains one of the most sensitive issues in South Asia. Experts believe that continued dialogue and cooperation will be important for maintaining regional stability and avoiding further escalation between the two countries.

Both governments continue to monitor developments closely as discussions surrounding water resources remain a major geopolitical issue.
